Professional Ear Wax Removal

St Mawes Pharmacy offers a professional ear microsuction service for the safe and effective removal of ear wax. Microsuction is considered one of the safest methods of ear wax removal and is performed by a trained healthcare professional.

Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction uses gentle suction to remove wax without the need to push water into the ear canal. This makes it suitable for patients with perforated eardrums, hearing aids, or a history of ear surgery.

How the Service Works

Step 1 — Ear Health Check

You will first attend the pharmacy for an ear health check. Our trained professional will examine your ears to assess the level of wax build-up and check for any other issues.

Step 2 — Preparation

If wax is found, you will be asked to apply olive oil to the affected ear(s) and lie in a horizontal position for 2 minutes. This needs to be done twice a day for a minimum of 3 to 4 days before the microsuction procedure. The olive oil softens the wax and makes the procedure more comfortable and effective.

Step 3 — The Procedure

On your return visit, our trained professional will use a gentle suction device to carefully remove the softened wax from your ear canal. The procedure typically takes 15–30 minutes and is performed in our private consultation room.

Comfortable and safe: Microsuction is a dry procedure — no water is flushed into the ear. Most patients find it quick, comfortable, and experience immediate improvement in hearing.

When to Consider Ear Microsuction

Common signs that you may benefit from ear wax removal include:

  • Muffled or reduced hearing in one or both ears
  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
  • Earache or discomfort
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Itching inside the ear canal
